It’s Not Easy Being Green fu cantata per la prima volta nel 1969 da Kermit del Muppet Show a cui dà voce il suo creatore Jim Henson.

All’inizio del brano Kermit si lamenta del suo colore, verde appunto, e sogna di essere di un altro colore.

Pian piano però, durante il brano, Kermit si accorge che il verde è il colore della primavera, degli alberi… e così inizia ad apprezzarlo. E conclude la canzone cantando di accettare il suo colore.

Kermit canta questa canzone diverse volte sia in puntate di Sesamo Apriti (Sesame Street) che durante il Muppet Show.

It’s Not Easy Being Green è stato un grande successo e negli anni è stata cantata anche da tanti altri artisti famosi, come Frank Sinatra, Van Morrison, Diana Ross e Ray Charles.

“Non è facile essere verde”, traduzione italiana del titolo della canzone, è diventata una frase molto popolare, specialmente se citata in lingua inglese.
Viene utilizzata come espressione malinconica della propria condizione, come protesta contro il razzismo e, più recentemente, anche con riferimenti ambientali (proprio perché parla di “Green”).
